Parisa Shiran, Chanchal Chandramouli and Fatema Samina Yasmin want to talk to you about gender equality.

The three Residents at Graduate House are currently seeking to launch a campaign in support of equality. Following in the footsteps of the highly respected and extremely successful HeForShe, launched last year by Emma Watson and UN Women, the Residents’ campaign is looking to increase awareness of the male’s role in equalisation of society. Feminism, or the support of an equal standing for women, is not only up to women to progress. Men have an equally important and instrumental role to play to ensure gender equality.

“I became involved in the “HeforShe” campaign as it does not put the emphasis of women’s advancement as a responsibility of women only,” said Fatema.

“It encourages men to come forward as agents of change for the achievement of gender equality and women rights. I believe that changes begin when the attitudes begin to change; how we begin to see women through the lens of inequality and decide to rectify it,” she said.

Fatema, like the others, believes that women’s equal representation in socio-economic and political decision making processes can contribute to a prosperous and sustainable world.

While the campaign is currently in the early developmental stages, the idea is to sell a single flower to people who are willing to support the cause. They will then pose for a photo with a #HeForShe sign, and their thoughts will be captured either by video, or quoted for a series of articles.

With a tiny initiative, they intend to achieve a much bigger outcome around the world through the diverse cultural environment of Graduate House and its Residents.

As future instruments of change, whether they find themselves in public or private institutions, involving themselves in such a campaign will give the Residents the awareness and understanding of the importance of achieving gender equality.

Parisa, Chanchal and Fatema are very excited to launch and execute this worthwhile campaign. They are currently seeking volunteers to help with the planning stages, and also looking for potential flower suppliers who could donate goods or funds.
