World Teachers’ Day

World Teachers’ Day is co-convened by UNICEF, the International Labour Organization (ILO) and Education International. It marks the adoption in 1994 of the 1966 ILO/UNESCO Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers which sets out teacher rights and responsibilities, standards for their initial preparation and further education, recruitment, employment, and teaching and learning conditions. Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4 on education — a human right and a force for sustainable development and peace — and is for education to empower people with the knowledge, skills and values to live in dignity, build their lives and contribute to their societies. SDG 4 in relation to teachers has the target (SDG 4.c) by 2030, to increase substantially the supply of qualified teachers, including through international cooperation for teacher training in developing countries, especially least developed countries and small island developing States (of the United Nations).
