World Post Day

9 October, 2021

World Post Day marks the 1874 establishment of the Universal Postal Union (UPU) in 1874 in Bern, Switzerland. The postal network comprises more than 650,000 offices and 5.3 million staff and public service mandates to deliver services to anyone, anywhere. The Day is to create awareness of the role of the postal sector in people’s and businesses’ everyday lives and its contribution to the social and economic development of countries. In many countries, philatelic exhibitions are organised, and new stamps, date cancellation marks and special souvenirs, such as T-shirts and badges, are issued. With letter-writing seen by many as a dying art, we encourage all to write and send a letter (which are just lovey to receive) – and, for those aged up to 15 years, to enter the UPU International Letter-Writing Competition for Young People. Entries must reach the UPU International Bureau no later than 5 May each year.
