World Philosophy Day

18 November, 2021

The word philosophy comes from theĀ GreekĀ philo (love) and sophia (wisdom). It is defined thus as the love of wisdom, and is the study of human existence: why a person is born; what is their purpose and how life is to be understood. The term is applied to a formalised secular or religious system of thought, to a personal construct, and/or to a communal understanding of proper attitude and conduct – the purpose of the system being to answer such questions. World Philosophy Day is to value philosophy for the development of human thought, for each culture and for each individual. It is to prompt the exercise of thinking, dialogue and the reasoned confrontation of opinions, and thus to understand and respond to major contemporary challenges by creating the intellectual conditions for change.
