World Maritime Day

International shipping, transporting more than 80 per cent of global trade, is the most efficient and cost-effective method of international transportation for most goods. It is dependable and a low-cost means of transporting goods globally, and facilitates commerce and economies. The International Maritime Organization (IMO) is responsible for the safety and security of shipping and the prevention of marine and atmospheric pollution by ships. With sustainable shipping and maritime development a priority, the IMO is developing and implementing global standards for energy efficiency, new technology and innovation, maritime education and training, maritime security, maritime traffic management and the development of the maritime infrastructure. The theme for World Maritime Day 2021 is Seafarers: at the core of shippingʹs future and is to to raise awareness of seafarersʹ vital role in world trade and to increase their visibility.
