World Day of Social Justice

20 February, 2021

Social development and justice are important to achieve and maintain peace and security within and among nations, and will not be attained in the absence of peace, security and respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms. Globalisation and interdependence give opportunities through trade, investment, capital flows and technology advances for world economic growth and improved living standards. However, there remain serious financial crises, insecurity, poverty, exclusion and inequality within and among societies and considerable obstacles to further integration and full participation in the global economy for many countries. The 2008 International Labour Organization (ILO) Declaration on Social Justice for a Fair Globalization is a major statement of principles and policies reflecting the agreed need for a strong social dimension towards fair outcomes for all. It gives a compass for the promotion of a fair globalization based on Decent Work, includes practical tools to accelerate progress in the implementation of the Decent Work Agenda at the country level, and highlights the importance of sustainable enterprises in creating greater employment and income opportunities.
