International Day of Commemoration in Memory of the Victims of the Holocaust

27 January, 2021

Established in 2005 by the United Nations, this day is in memory of the Holocaust victims and to acknowledge the global commitment to counter antisemitism, racism and other forms of intolerance that may lead to group-targeted violence. The date is the anniversary of the liberation of the Nazi Concentration and Extermination Camp of Auschwitz-Birkenau by Soviet troops on 27 January 1945. The global collective responsibility is to address residual trauma, maintain effective remembrance policies, care for historic sites and promote education, documentation and research on this genocide. It is also to strengthen the resilience of young people against ideologies of hatred.
