Building the Future

By donating today, you are increasing our ability to nurture and attend to the wellbeing of a greater number of postgraduate students, minimising negative situational factors that can lead to depression and early departure from study.

And yet you are contributing to more than just the wellbeing of a select few. Whilst postgraduate students are ‘lone wolves’ during their study years, they go on to become the world’s pioneers and leaders in innovation, often improving quality of life for all of us. By donating, you are enhancing their support systems and hence increasing their chances of success.

Research: Coursework

From 2008 to 2012, The University of Melbourne saw relatively stable numbers in the amount of research degree enrolments (3,167 to 3,201) but a near doubling of the numbers enrolled for postgraduate coursework degrees (6,742 to 12,517). This trend for coursework enrolments is expected to continue.

There are currently ample scholarship and bursary opportunities available across the board to research students, yet dramatically less opportunities available to coursework students. This is notwithstanding that there are almost fourfold the amount of coursework students compared to research students.

A Gift in Perpetuity

Once the Diamond Jubilee building development is completed, each of the 136 new accommodation rooms will generate revenue. Of this revenue, a percentage will feed back into endowments to provide scholarship and bursary opportunities to postgraduates.

Most of these endowment opportunities will be for postgraduates completing coursework degrees, enabling us to even out the ratios for coursework/research endowments, and making your generous gift, one in perpetuity.

Good for the Community

Investing in communities is good for business – and holds a clear competitive advantage that customers, investors and employees are demanding, creating a win – win situation.

There is an inextricable link between communities and surrounding businesses, with evidence showing that the two can reinforce each other through cooperation and good will.

Graduate Union is a Not-for-Profit organisation and is registered with Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission (ACNC). Your donation is fully tax deductible.

Good for Business

Naming rights on an ensuite double bed room, theatrette or one of the other significant rooms and spaces are available on application. We would be honoured to display your name or your companies name in recognition of its generosity and support.

There are many advantages to your business supporting the Diamond Jubilee campaign.

With the potential of an ongoing relationship comes many benefits including opportunities for joint ventures and access to a pool of high caliber graduates from various disciplines.

Good for Australia

Many of the 27.3% of students that make up the Australian postgraduate community are international students who are contributing significantly to the economy.

Education is now Australia’s third-largest export after coal and iron ore and is ahead of tourism as Australia’s largest service export. In fact, total spending by international students in Australia – including course fees, accommodation, living expenses and recreation -was $19.2 billion in 2015.

These economic benefits will continue if the necessary support infrastructure is in place, reinforcing Australia’s reputation as a leading provider of tertiary education and academic lifestyle in a competitive global market.
