Emeritus Professor Ian Polmear AO
Wednesday November 10, Noon for 12.30pm Graduate House, 220 Leicester Street, CarltonIan Polmear is a graduate in metallurgical engineering from The University of Melbourne. After first working in local industry, he joined the Materials Division of the former Aeronautical Research Laboratories and later became Leader of the Aircraft Materials Group. In 1967, he made a mid-career change when he was appointed to the Chair of Materials Science at Monash University where he was responsible for establishing the Department of Materials Engineering, and later spent a term as Deputy Vice-Chancellor. Since retiring he been a part time consultant and has served on several Commonwealth Government Committees concerned with materials and energy. During his career he has also worked in England, Switzerland, and in Japan where has been a Visiting Professor at Tohoku University, Sendai. He has been awarded the Degree of Doctor of Engineering by his alma mater, and is a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering. Recently he was elected an Honorary Fellow of the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining, UK.
His interest in energy issues was first stimulated when he was invited to prepare a review of the role of materials in energy production. From 1987 to 1990 he was a member of the National Energy Research, Development, and Demonstration Council where he had special responsibility for programs concerned with renewable energy. From 1996-2000 he chaired the Technical Reference Committee that managed a safety assessment, remaining life study, and seismic analysis of the HIFAR Nuclear Research Reactor in Sydney. He is a Past-President of the Australian Institute for Nuclear Science and Engineering, and currently serves on the Nuclear Safety Committee of the regulatory authority the Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency. In his talk he will give special attention to the comparative risks and benefits of producing base load electrical power by nuclear and other means.
